Presents for a 1 year old

Are you looking for awesome presents for a one year old? This week we have had a friend’s 1st birthday.  Having recently had J’s 1st birthday and Christmas, I felt quite confident buying presents for the little one, so I’ve put together a list of great gifts for 1 year olds (in no particular order).

  1. Musical instruments.

Children's instruments - ideal present for a 1 year oldAll of the 1 year olds I know love instruments.  Whatever you choose will be loved by the child.  From maracas to a drum to bells or even a toddler keyboard.  A sure winner.

From a Mother to Another

Last year, I was excited when I saw details about the ‘From a Mother to Another’ charity campaign.  I had been lucky enough to have a baby shower and receive lots of baby gifts when J was born and I felt passionate about giving something back.  This charity campaign, run by JoJo Maman Bebe (one of my favourite baby shops), allowed me to do good with great ease.

Activities for a 1 year old

J has just turned 14 months.  So what has he been up to in the last month?  Obviously all babies develop at different rates and have different interests, but these activities are what J enjoyed doing at 13 months.

Sensory food play

We have been creating lots of food play activities to try to encourage J to eat.  He doesn’t like new textures in his mouth so if the food actually gets into his mouth then it is usually spat back out again.  Sometimes he doesn’t like touching the food with his hands, so then he uses brightly coloured plastic spoons (Ikea) to interact.  Even if your baby doesn’t need sensory play, it is a fun activity if you don’t mind the mess.  I am looking forward to playing with some of the messier food items (baked beans and custard) when it is warmer and we can go in the garden.

Does your baby sleep through the night?

“Does your baby sleep through the night yet?”  This was what I was asked every time we met someone new, from the supermarket worker, to the old lady waiting at the bus stop, to mums in baby groups for the first 8 months of J’s life.  Why are people obsessed with how my baby sleeps?  What is it to them?  Can’t they tell from the bags under my eyes and the mismatched clothing that I clearly had very little sleep last night?  Are they just asking to irritate me?

2016 Family Wishlist

There are so many everyday wonderful things to experience for the first time with J.  Below is our wishlist for this year.  There are also lots of things on our family bucket list, which I will share at a later date, but these activities are possible with J as a toddler.

My 2016 family wishlist

1. Go for a family bike ride.

2. Go for a family picnic.

We went for picnics last year but J doesnt eat yet (even though he is over a year old) so Im looking forward to a picnic with all of us enjoying the tasty treats.

3. Make iced biscuits.

This is one of my happy memories icing biscuits and decorating them before eating them all up.

4. Go on a train.

5. Sing Christmas carols together.

Of course this is me presuming that J will be able to talk well enough by the time he is 2, but even if it is an attempt!
