Summer Bucket List for Preschoolers

A blue child's bucket with yellow spade inside it on a wet sandy beach

Now that we are in June, I decided to make a list of all the fun things I would like to do with J this year and so I have created a summer bucket list. A couple of the activities we did last year and they were such a hit that they had to make it onto this year’s list. However, most of these activities are new and I can’t wait to get out and about with J having fun in the sun. I have purposely chosen activities which are mostly available locally to me but you could easily adapt them to your area too. I have also ensured that most of my summer bucket list ideas are not too expensive to make this more achievable.

AWJ in May: Florida, Sunshine and Bank Holiday Weekend

This month is going to be hard to beat this year as it has been absolutely fabulous! We came out of a very long wet and cold winter to start May on a major high with a trip to Florida. We spent the majority of our holiday at the Disney Parks, but we did venture out to see some alligators in the wild, to visit the white sands of Siesta Key and to Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic Coast to try to see a space launch.

Since we are heading to Orlando this year, we will have two 10 hour flights to amuse J on. Therefore, I was rather excited when offered the opportunity to review a new educational resource website for teachers and parents called Mrs Mactivity. There is only so long that J will spend watching TV or playing with a couple of cars on a plane, so I thought it would be great to print off some fun resources for him to colour or craft with while flying across the Atlantic Ocean. There are some great resources on Mrs Mactivity for us to choose from.

Creating a Play Town

J's play town using masking tape to create roads and toys to create play segments.
Good Friday was forecast heavy rain so I was pondering activities that I could set up for J to keep him entertained inside. Recently, I have created a few small worlds for him but I quickly learnt that if cars aren’t involved somehow in the play then the small world won’t hold J’s interest. So rather than trying to fight his love of cars and encourage him to have a wider range of interests, I fully embraced J’s car obsession and decided to create a whole play town for him that centred around a masking tape road.

Toddler Talk: The World According to J at Two and Three Quarters

Since I last wrote on my blog 11 months ago, J has grown considerably. Therefore, I thought it only fair to update you on what life is like according to J at two and three quarters. It is fair to say that it is mostly wonderful, but there has been a definite increase in toddler frustration and no’s since we last caught up!

“Sunshine makes me happy mummy.” This is a phrase that J utters quite frequently and I definitely feel that I am to blame for this one. I hate rain and cold and wind and adore blue skies and sunshine and clearly I am passing this lesson onto my son.
